A catalog describes data set attributes and indicates the volumes on which a data set is located. Electronic Catalog The presentation of product information in electronic form.

4 Electronic Catalog Catalogs have been printed on paper for generations. Recently, electronic catalogs on CD-ROM and the Internet have gained popularity. Electronic catalogs consists of product database, directory and search capabilities and a presentation function.

5 Electronic Catalog For merchants, the objective of electronic catalogs is to advertise and promote products and services. For the customer, the purpose of such catalogs is to locate information on products and services. Electronic catalogs can be very large; for example, the library of congress web catalog (catalog.loc.gov) contains millions of records. An automotive catalog example ;

6 Electronic Catalog Online Catalogs have evolved to become more dynamic, customized and integrated with selling and buying procedures. Electronic catalogs can be classified according to three dimensions: The dynamics of the information presentation The degree of customization Integration with business processes

7 Electronic Catalogs The dynamics of the information presentation
Catalogs may be static or dynamic. In static catalogs, information is presented in text and static pictures. In dynamic catalogs, information is presented in motion pictures or animation, possible with supplemental sound.

8 Electronic Catalog The degree of customization
Catalogs may be standard or customized. In standard catalogs, merchants offer the same catalog to any customer. In customized catalogs, content, pricing and display are tailored to the characteristics of the specific customers.

9 Electronic Catalog Integration with business processes.
Catalogs can be classified according to the degree of integration with the following business processes or features: order taking and fulfillment; electronic payment system; intranet workflow software and systems; inventory and accounting systems; suppliers' or customers' extranets; and paper catalogs.
