1 LT3: Nuclear Fission, Fusion, Power, & Weapons

2 Transmutation the changing of one element into another by radioactive decay, nuclear bombardment, or similar processes.

3 Natural vs. Induced Natural Transmutation- Without the presence of an another entity, the number of protons change. In simpler terms there is only one reactant. Artificial Transmutation- A change in the number of protons caused by another entity. So there are two reactants.

4 Fission of U-235

5 Fission of U-235

6 Creating Energy & Electricity
Energy is released when the nucleus splits. VERY exothermic process. Energy heats water to create steam. Steam turns a turbine to generate electricity.

7 What are the Pros of using nuclear energy to generate electricity?
Pros vs. Cons What are the Pros of using nuclear energy to generate electricity? What are the Cons of using nuclear energy to generate electricity?

8 Fusion of Hydrogen 4 Hydrogen nuclei fuse to create 1 Helium nuclei, 2 Beta particles, and A LOT of energy Even more energy than a fission reaction Requires temperatures of 5,000,000 K to happen This temperature can be generated by an atomic explosion (aka: nuclear bomb)

9 Practical Applications of Fusion
Where does it happen every day? Can we use it as an energy source? Why or Why not? What are the pros? What are the cons?
