*On your worksheet, brainstorm what you know about higher education

3 The “ABCD’s” of Higher Education
Community or Junior College Associate College/University Bachelor Graduate/Professional School Master a “concentration” Graduate/Professional School Doctorate

4 Community/Junior College
General education courses (Math, English, Science, etc.) Prepares you to transfer to a 4-year college/university Upon completion, you receive an Associate degree (2-year) Can also earn a technical or vocational certificate *Possible Jobs: See handout

College/University Allows you to focus on a particular area of study called a “major” You can choose to live on campus in the dorms or live off campus and commute Upon completion, you receive a Bachelor’s degree (4-years) *Possible Jobs: See handout

6 Graduate/Professional School
Expands your knowledge and allows you to concentrate on a specific area of study, which makes you an expert in your field Upon completion, you receive a Master’s (2-3years) or Doctorate (3-5 years) You can receive a Master’s degree only after you have a Bachelor’s degree and you have to have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees to receive a Doctorate degree. *Possible Jobs: See handout

7 “Why Should I Pursue Higher Education?”
By 2020, a large percentage of jobs will require educational training BEYOND a high school diploma “The more you learn, the more you earn” On average, a college graduate makes almost 1 million dollars more over a lifetime than a high school graduate *Review Handout Higher quality of life- what do you think this means?

“I have to get all A’s to get into college” “I need to have a lot of money to attend college” “I need to know exactly what I want to do” “Someone in my family has to have a college degree in order for me to go too” *Discuss as a class!

There are over 3,000 colleges/universities in the United States! Over 30 colleges/universities in Washington State! They vary in size, gender, faith, and academic programs
