3. 10/5: MLA In-Text Citations
Objective: The student will learn how to correctly cite evidence in the essay using the MLA format
Task: Write down the above title slide.

4. What is MLA?
MLA stands for Modern Language Association which establishes guidelines for preparing student research papers and projects and scholarly magazines. “MLA style” refers to a system of citing sources.

5. Why do I need to cite evidence in my essay?
Citing identifies and credits sources used in a research paper or essay.
When you borrow from other sources to support your argument or research you must give proper credit. If you do not cite a source, you are guilty of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a form of cheating or stealing. It is the unacknowledged use of another person’s words or ideas.

6. When to put the source into the paper
A direct quotation from the source.
Paraphrased information from the source.
Even if you paraphrase or summarize, you MUST ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SOURCE!

8. Paraphrasing your source by using the author’s name
…..the Everglades were changed by settlers when they drained the swampland that the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes considered useless (Haskell 113). Later on, additional changes were made by the U.S. Army when they dredged streams and nearly drained the Everglades (113).

9. Quoting directly from the same source in the same paragraph
…… It is to be expected that such changes upset the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades. According to Tobey Haskell, “the quantity and diversity of the original wetlands of South Florida no longer exist today” (113). Such damage encouraged Congress and environmentalists to defend and preserve the Everglades in recent years (114).

10. Another Example
…..In Past and Present: The Florida Everglades, Tobey Haskell identifies several ways in which the Florida Everglades was damaged in order to turn swampland into farmland (113).

11. In the future….
We will work on correctly citing books, poems, newspapers, web sites, and other kinds of citations in the future.
