1 DLR Notes- Tuesday, January 3, Parallel Structure Parallel structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence. This means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more words or ideas are of equal importance and to help the reader comprehend what is being written. It is grammatically correct to ensure that phrases, clauses and items on a list after a colon (:) use the correct parallel structure.  Example Not Parallel: Ellen likes hiking, the rodeo, and to take afternoon naps. Parallel: Ellen likes hiking, attending the rodeo, and taking afternoon naps. You may also rewrite sentences in other ways, but it must be grammatically consistent.

Rewrite the following sentences using parallel structure: My dog not only likes to play fetch, but also chase cars. My best friend took me dancing and to a show. It's harder to do long division than dividing with a calculator. Joe likes singing, walking and to dive.
