ETP Emporium Bill Leithead ETP Wind Coordinator 31st May 2017

2 Mission Statement for Event
The ETP will identify avenues of cooperation that will support the development of the draft Energy Strategy. Each session will produce a statement identifying the RDD required to deliver the strategy, and the avenues of potential collaboration across sectors

3 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Scottish Energy Strategy: The future of Energy in Scotland

4 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
A new 2030 ‘all-energy’ target for the equivalent of 50% of Scotland’s heat, transport and electricity consumption to be supplied from renewables. Between 11 and 17GW of renewable capacity by 2030 In 2014,19% of Scotland’s final energy consumption is from Electricity. In 2015, renewables represented 42% of electricity production in Scotland, equivalent to 59% of electricity requirements. Since UK General Election been substantial negative changes for support of key renewable energy technologies.

5 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Onshore wind Lowest cost renewable electricity Now a mature technology Work with industry to meet the challenge of delivering onshore wind without subsidy Offshore Wind Hugh optimism for further development in Scotland. Offshore wind has potential to play a pivotal role. Innovation, especially technologies like floating wind, to position Scotland as world centre Continue to support innovation and cost reduction.

6 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Onshore Wind Policy Statement

7 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Route to Market Onshore wind mature sector and lowest cost renewable electricity technology at scale SG challenge to industry: UK’s first commercial wind farm without subsidy Areas of new SG support Considering efficiency of new wind farms in the consenting procedure Facilitating cost reductions: smarter planning, transforming the grid, Revenue resolution (life extension, storage) Encouraging innovation

8 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Repowering Should be assessed as with brand new developments Consider efficiency to ensure continued use of sites with best enrgy resources Developing a strategic approach to new development Take into account cumulative impact Locally coordinated approach Business as usual for consenting applications Barriers to Deployment Civil aviation radar Military aviation radar

9 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Protection for Residents and the environment Community Benefits Shared ownership

10 ETP Emporium Wind Theme
Academic perspective Technology is advancing rapidly Hugh scope for innovation Scottish universities are a large resource Challenges About reducing cost of energy Offshore all aspects Onshore and offshore, systems level approach
