Police commissioner, assistant sec. to the Navy, creates volunteer cavalry brigade “The rough riders” who become famous for their role in the battle at San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American War Elected Governor of New York, and later the Vice President President William McKinley assassinated, and Teddy becomes Prez

Promotes many progressive ideals – goes after big business and trusts – calls it the “square deal” because it is for the common people – ideal represents “populism” or support for the common people like farmers and laborers Becomes known as a Trust Buster – goes after big companies – Carnegie, Rockefellers, etc. – Wants to use federal regulation of the Rail Roads

Meat Inspection Act – cleanliness requirements for meatpackers – can thank “The Jungle” for this law Pure food and drug act – 1906 – Halted sale of contaminated foods and medicines – creates labeling system on foods

10 Roosevelt in Office Roosevelt loves outdoors – came to Idaho a lot! Conservation – planned use of natural resources – preserve some of nature, and use some for the common good
