SMART GOALS Betina & Jeremiah Rhine Peña

What is a SMART goal? A goal is simply a set finish line, established and achievable. A SMART goal is much more specific and definable – and makes achievement easy to celebrate!

“S” stands for: Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six “W” questions: *Who:      Who is involved? *What:     What do I want to accomplish? *Where:    Identify a location. *When:     Establish a time frame. *Which:    Identify requirements and constraints. *Why:      Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. Synonyms to guide your goal-setting: simple, sensible, significant

“M” stands for: Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal. To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as…… How much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished? Synonyms to guide your goal-setting: meaningful, motivating

“A” stands for: Attainable – The goal should be attainable within the timeframe allotted but also aggressive enough to inspire folks to rise to the occasion. The former head of IKEA, Goran Carstedt said “People need goals worthy of their commitment.” These are goals that stretch us, grow us and also inspire us! Synonyms: aggressive, agreed, achievable

“R” stands for: Results-based and relevant- To be results-based and relevant, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work toward. Goals must also be within reach. For example: students scores on 7.10C will improve by 6% on the STAAR Reading Test in spring, 2017. Non-example: students scores on 7.10C will improve by 26% on the STAAR Reading Test in spring, 2017. Synonym: reasonable, realistic and resourced

“T” stands for: Timely – A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there’s no sense of urgency. If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to lose it by? “Someday” won’t work. But if you anchor it within a timeframe, “by May 1st”, then you’ve set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal. Setting a goal that is time-bound builds internal accountability and commitment. Synonyms: time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive

SMART Examples: The achievement gap in math between White and Latino students in grades 6-8 scoring at meets or exceeds will decrease by at least 5% as measured by STAAR Reading administered during the spring of 2017. All students in reading intervention classes will have a 7 point increase on common formative assessments from fall 2016 to winter 2017. Using the President’s Challenge physical fitness program components, all students will increase their physical fitness, with 85% of students performing at or above the 50th percentile on all five components. 100% of 8th grade students will score proficient or higher on the end of semester sketching assessment as scored using a rubric. All 8th grade band students will be able to perform Birdland with 95% accuracy by May 2014.
