1 The Periodic Table Of Elements: A Brief Overview
By: Lindsey Bailey

2 The Periodic Table Of Elements
Originally constructed and published by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. Families of elements within the Periodic Table of Elements How the Periodic Table is constructed Chemical Bonds

3 Dmitri Mendeleev First to arrange the 63 known elements by atomic mass into a table Left gaps in the table for new, undiscovered elements Predicted the properties of unknown elements For more information on Mendeleev visit

4 Families Of Elements Halogens- highly active elements that have the worst odor and most brilliant color Alkali Metals- soft, very active with very low melting points Inert Gases- in contrast with active halogens and alkali metals, inert gases are so inactive that they form only a handful of compounds

5 The Periodic Table Includes…
Atomic Mass- the average mass of an element in atomic mass units Atomic Number- the number of protons in an atom defines what element it is Atomic symbol- the atomic symbol is one or two letters chosen to represent an element Group- vertical columns Period- horizontal row

6 Layout Of The Table Atomic Symbol Period Atomic Number Atomic Mass G R

7 Chemical Bonds Covalent Bond- when one or more pairs of electrons are shared by two atoms Ionic Bond- when one or more electrons from one atom shift to another atom; resulting ions attract each other No Bond- when atoms do not interact to produce an attractive force

8 No Bond

9 Make Any Sense?
