1 Data Availability for IMAGINE Project in Ethiopia
Kindie Tesfaye CIMMYT Kickoff workshop on Integrated assessment of the determinants of the MAize yield Gap in Sub-Saharan Africa: towards farm INnovation and Enabling policies (IMAGINE)) 10-12 March 2015 Wageningen, the Netherlands

2 List of exiting maize projects that could contribute to IMAGINE project in Ethiopia
Global Yield Gap Atlas (GYGA) project ( ) Implemented in Ethiopia on maize and wheat Data collected: daily historical weather/climate dominant soil types crop management practices actual yield yield at experiment stations

3 Project regions and districts
List of projects… Project regions and districts Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME) Project ( ) implemented in three maize growing AEZs of Ethiopia: drought-prone, mid-altitude moist and highland areas collects data on variety improvement, agronomy, seed systems and nutrition

4 List of projects… Sustainable Intensification of Maize-Legume cropping systems for food security in ESA (SIMLESA) ( ) Implemented in 5 ESA countries including Ethiopia and spill-over countries Collects data on: On-farm experiments (agronomy) maize intercropping and crop rotation with legumes, conservation agriculture and seed systems

5 List of Projects…: SIMLESA in Ethiopia
The project in Ethiopia has two components: Main SIMLESA-supported by ACIAR (Phase 1: ; Phase 2: ) SIMLESA expansion-supported by AusAID ( ) Being implemented by federal & regional research institute of the country with 8 research centres Implemented in 17 districts Different maize-legume agro-ecologies

6 List of projects… Drought Tolerance Maize for Africa (DTMA)
DTMA is implemented in 13 African Countries funded by the BMG foundation CIMMYT is responsible in the ESA region for: Developing and delivering drought tolerant genotypes Develop DTM with increased heat tolerance Targeting, adoption monitoring and impact study of DT varieties Support NARES in seed production of varieties for Regional Trials Identify farmer-preferred hybrids and open-pollinated varieties Undertake training for breeding and variety testing in NARES and private seed companies Support NARES in data management and seed storage

7 List of projects… Adoption Pathways Project (2012-2015)
Implemented in the five SIMLESA project countries Collects gender disaggregated data on adoption of sustainable maize-legume systems Collaborates with national partners in each country

8 List of projects… Taking Maize Agronomy to Scale in Africa (TAMASA) ( ) Implementation countries are Ethiopia, Nigeria &Tanzania To develop products/ tools that are needed to translate data to useful (agronomic) information/knowledge that can be acted upon & used at scale by different users

9 Other related projects on maize
Diffusion and Impact of Improved Varieties in Africa (DIIVA) Project ( ) Conservation Agriculture and Smallholder Farmers in Eastern and Southern Africa (CASFESA) Farm Mechanization & Conservation Agriculture for Sustainable Intensification (CASFESA)
