1 Creating and Sustaining an RtI Culture
IASCD April 10, 2013 Facilitated by Dr. Troyce Fisher, SAI

2 Learning Outcomes for this Session:
Learn some strategies for moving others (based on Daniel Pink’s latest work) Look at how Pink’s research intersects with our Theory of Action for RtI. Look at how Pinks research can support building a KASAB for an RtI culture.

3 Our Challenge: To help others embrace the idea that all kids deserve a rigorous course of study and success achieving it.

4 The Role of Culture in Meeting Our Challenge

5 One Reminder About Change:

6 The End of the Elevator Speech
How can you offer something so compelling that other staff want to talk about it, collaborate about it, and eventually own it?

7 Strategy # 1: “Pitch” Distill your point to its persuasive essence.

8 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)
Number One:

9 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)
Number Two:

10 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)

11 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)

12 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)

13 6 Ways to Enroll Others into an RtI Culture (The “Pitch”)

14 Your Turn: Pick One “Pitch” and Customize it to RtI
The One-Word Pitch The Question Pitch The Rhyming Pitch The Subject Line Pitch The Twitter Pitch The Pixar Pitch: Once upon a time_____. Every day _____. One day ______. Because of that, _____. Because of that, _____. Until finally _______.

15 Strategy # 2: Improvise Enlist the power of questions to find a way to Win/Win

16 Your Turn: Choose a partner with whom you do not work or do not know.
Choose one of these topics as your discussion focus: √ Moving athletic programs from schools to communities. (European model) √ Giving kids multiple chances to pass an exam √ Paying teachers according to scores on the Iowa Assessments Person A chooses to endorse this idea. Person B takes the opposite view but can only respond with questions when Person A advocates.

17 Rules for Questioning (1) You cannot ask “Yes-no” questions.
(2) Your questions cannot be veiled opinions. (3) Your partner must answer each question.

18 So, How Does This Fit with RtI?
Developing a Theory of Action

19 Identify at least 6 If Statements that apply to your school to avoid “And then a miracle happens” thinking. If we… Then…all staff will be engaged in an RtI culture by delivering rigorous curriculum and ensuring all succeed in mastering it.

20 Strategy Number Three: Serve
Make it personal Make it purposeful Use “emotionally intelligent” sound bites

21 So, How Does This Fit with RtI?
Think of the professional learning needs of the staff. Organize your thoughts around a KASAB. How do you structure the work so the staff are “served” by their experiences?

22 Concluding Thoughts Find Uncommon Commonalities 5 minutes, 3 people
What’s the Lesson? Similarity is a key form of human connection.
