Blueprint Writing Assessment Time Guidelines Plan: Write: Practise: Deliver: 1 day 2 days 3 days The Shoemaker and the Elves Create a sequel to a story. A poor shoemaker had enough leather to make one pair of shoes. That night, he left the leather on the table. In the morning, he found a perfect pair of finished shoes. He was shocked! He sold them immediately. Now he could buy leather for two pairs of shoes. The next night, he left leather on his table, and by morning new shoes were finished! He quickly sold those shoes too. This happened for a long time, making the shoemaker very rich. One night, the shoemaker and his wife waited up to see who was helping them. At midnight came two little elves. They sat down at the table and used their tiny fingers to sew and hammer perfect shoes. The shoemaker was amazed! When they finished, they ran away. The wife said: “We should thank the elves. I will make them little shirts, coats, and pants. You can make them shoes." The next evening they laid the presents on the table, and hid from sight. At midnight the elves came in ready to work. But instead they found the little clothes. The elves clapped their hands with joy. They put on their clothes and shoes and skipped out of the window. Before you write: Think about the sequel you will write. Think about your characters, setting, problem, events and ending. Organise your ideas in the planning chart. This Writing Assessment should take approximately two weeks to complete. All of the instructions for the Writing Assessment should be read aloud to the students. There is a stop sign placed strategically on the page to indicate where students should stop and wait for further instructions. Before beginning the Writing Assessment, please make sure that all students have a copy of the Writing Assessment and a pencil. Ready to begin? Teacher, READ ALOUD to students: During this writing test, you will have to work by yourself, so listen carefully while I tell you what to do. Today, you will respond to the story The Shoemaker and the Elves (Read the story aloud to students.) Before you create a sequel, think about what you want to happen next. Think about the characters, setting, problem, events and solution. Some questions you might want to think about are: What will happen next for the characters? What new problems will the character(s) face? How will the problem be solved? Instruct students to turn to the page with the planning chart. When you write: Use the same characters, but a different setting and problem to write the beginning of the story. Use the events to write what happens in the middle of the story. Write an ending to your story that explains how the problem is solved. While you write, remember to: Capitalise your title, any proper nouns and the beginning of each sentence. Use ending punctuation and commas, as needed. Use correct spelling. When you present, remember to: Stand up in front of your partner or group. Speak in a clear voice. Read slowly and carefully.

Please use your planning chart to help you write. Also, note that part of the two days of writing will include improving and editing their narrative. Instructions are included with the improving and editing charts. When you write: Use the same characters, but a different setting and problem to write the beginning of the story. If computers are available, the final draft can be typed. Teacher, READ ALOUD to students: Students, first improve your text. Use the checklist to make sure you are including interesting details about the characters, events and setting of your narrative. Next, edit your narrative. Use the checklist to check for grammar and spelling errors.
