Classroom management New Teacher Orientation August 2, 2017

2 What is Classroom Management?
Refers to all of the things a teacher does to organize students, space, time, and materials so that student learning can take place.

3 What? How? When? An effective teacher comprises a plan- a set of procedures that structure the classroom so the students know what to do, how to do it, and when to do it in a classroom.

4 When developing procedures consider what Students Need to know:
EXPECTATIONS WHAT SHOULD I SAY WHEN ENTERING THE CLASS? WHAT TONE OF VOICE IS APPROPRIATE? WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I ARRIVE TO SCHOOL LATE? WHAT IF I FINISH MY WORK EARLY? WILL I LOSE POINTS IF I AM NOISY DURING CLASS? WHERE SHOULD I SIT IN CLASS? WHAT IF SOMEONE NEAR ME IS BOTHERING ME?

5 Teaching Procedures An organized classroom operates with procedures. There are three important steps used to teach students how to follow procedures. Teach Rehearse Reinforce These steps are used on the first day of school and everyday throughout the school year.

6 What do students want to know the first day of school?

7 7 Questions All Students Want to Know the First Day of School
1) Am I in the right room? 2)Where am I supposed to sit? 3)What am I going to learn? 4) How will I be graded? 5) What are the rules in the classroom? 6) Who is the teacher as a person? 7) Will this teacher treat me fairly? Harry Wong

8 Start Of School Checklist
Rules are developed and aligned with SWPBIS expectations Rules and Expectations are posted Classroom routines and procedures have been developed Method for teaching routines and procedures is ready and some routines are posted Professional diplomas are displayed Students’ schedule is posted A signal to quiet the class is established and ready to be taught

9 Start of School Checklist cont.
Classroom is arranged for easy proximity First day script is prepared Classroom environment conveys the message that learning is important- Look around you. Is your classroom welcoming, safe, easy to maneuver, diverse?

10 First Day Script Plan Greet each student at the door
Warm up activity on board Welcome students to class and introduce yourself (who are you?) Explain rules and daily procedures-What, How, When? Respect the classroom and supplies Explain subject and content of class Explain students’ expectations- Have a “culture of consistency”

11 Consistency refers to:
Predictability Reliability Dependability Stability The students know what to do (procedures, Unit C) and know what to learn (objectives, Unit D). Harry and Rosemary Wong

12 Effective teacher The effective teacher is a PROACTIVE teacher.  These teachers put plans into action.  They have classroom management plans filled with procedures for doing things in the classroom; they have lesson plans filled with various strategies to help children learn; and they have expectation plans that foster and support a positive attitude in their students.

13 Ineffective teacher The ineffective teacher is a REACTIVE teacher.  The ineffective teacher does not have a classroom management plan.  As problems occur, the teacher repeatedly reacts from one problem to the next.  There is no change or improvement, just battling the kids every day.

14 For your sanity, it is not wise or healthy to run from one problem to the next, repeating this same scenario every day.  The reactive teacher is constantly looking for a one-shot, simple solution to take care of the problem—now!  Even worse, the reactive teacher asks, “What do I do to this kid?” Please, never do something to someone.  We are in the profession of doing things for someone.

15 School-Wide PBIS Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
School-Wide Expectations and rules taught in settings during first week of school School-Wide Reinforcement System in use-What is it? Minor/Major problem behavior defined-Be prepared Leveled system for dealing with minor/major problem in use Your classroom management should not be a mystery!

16 Breaking it Down… Expectations Rules & Routines Social Skills
Think of Expectations like a Mission Statement , the overall purpose. All schools have SW Expectations. Rules & Routines Think of rules & routines like a Vision Statement, vivid descriptions of how we will carry out the Mission. Social Skills The specific skills we need to have to carry out those descriptions and ultimately fulfill the Mission.

24 Conscious Discipline

25 Overview Conscious Discipline integrates social-emotional learning, discipline and self-regulation so you spend less time policing behaviors and more time teaching vital life skills. Conscious Discipline utilizes everyday events rather than an external curriculum, and addresses the adult's emotional intelligence as well as the child's. Learn to respond to daily conflict in a way that transforms it into an opportunity to teach critical life skills, and watch every aspect of your classroom life improve!

32 Have a wonderful year!

33 You can make a difference!
I’ve come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool for torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized. Haim Ginott
