(The Case of Vrasna coast, October 2006
COAST FLOODING AND EROSION DURING SEA SURGES AND SEVERE STORMS IN THE AEGEAN SEA (The Case of Vrasna coast, October 2006 M, Vafeiadis, Th. Karambas Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Introduction During the October 2006, very extreme storms and rainfalls have been recorded, all around Greece, resulting in important local flooding and bridge destruction. Along the coast at the city of Vrasna, at 80Km east from Thessaloniki, very important erosion has been observed, leading to the destruction of the local street and threatening the foundation of the buildings. Initially the destruction has been thought as due to flooding, from inland. The magnitude of the erosion and is extent does not comply with this hypothesis. Various facts suggest that in this case a combination of wind driven sea rise, wave action and inland flooding is the reason for such extended erosion.

Sea level rise at coast, due to wind

Computed sea rise at North Aegean due to winds

Raising sea levels due to winds 10 Bf

Conclusions: Soft bed coasts suffer from continuous degradation and erosion, especially when the local sediment balance becomes negative, due to the decrease of sediment transport from the mainland. Any exceptional or long time sea rise intensifies the flooding and erosion effects as the local shoreline is pushed towards the land. Global warming can produce long term problems due to the probable sea rise
