14. Indus Valley
The Indus Valley civilization began in the northwest of India, near the Indus River.

15. Geography of Indus Valley
The Indus River provided water.
The Hindu Kush mountains and the Himalaya mountains kept out invaders, and blocked cold winds, but also made travel out more difficult.
The Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean helped people travel and trade.

16. Monsoon A monsoon is a SEASONAL WIND.
Dry winds in winter create a dry climate.
In summer, winds pick up moisture from the oceans, so they create a rainy season.
This helps crops to grow, but can also cause flooding.
Phoenix is the only other place in the world other than India to have a monsoon! 

17. In spite of the mountains and seas…
Even though India was somewhat isolated by high mountains in the North and seas on two coasts, invaders managed to enter it and bring changes to the culture!
