Archaeologists in different countries are working in very different ways within very different legal and financial environments (access to archaeological sites and data may be centrally controlled, academic or preventative), but there is still much we can do to learn from and support each other.

Unease with public participation in the research process and potential dangers in an ‘all views are equally valid’ approach. Issues of whether data created using citizen science is sufficiently rigorous. Need to think carefully about differences between academic and non-academic discourse.

What are the biggest challenges to sustainability?

Archaeologists not very good at making choices about what to keep and what to throw away (analogue or digital). Selection and retention policies vital to making good decisions about loss.

What are the biggest challenges to sustainability?
Need to understand the workflow of how data was created in order to trust it enough to re-use it. Need to reach out to those with different skill sets to archaeology to help design for re-use. Need to think into the future about who the different audiences for re-use might be.

When people 50 years from now look back at the work we did to make archaeological data sustainable, we want them to think we were doing our best and made good decisions.
