Unit 3, Lesson 5 or Lesson 27 Naming & Formulas for Covalent Molecules
To my students, I will be late to school today, So you have a substitute teacher. Be extra helpful/studious and earn bonus points! OR Be talkative/distracted while taking notes and earn the evil quiz!!!
2
Covalent is Caring is Sharing!
3
Covalent Elements Diatomic elements are:
H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, and I2. They keep their element names (No –ide!) Ex. F2 fluorine
4
Naming Covalent Molecules
1st element with prefixes 2nd element with prefixes and ends in –IDE 1 mono 6 hexa 2 di 7 hepta 3 tri 8 octa 4 tetra 9 Nona 5 penta 10 deca
5
diphosphorus decachloride CO Carbon monoxide N2O4
Ex. SiO2 Silicon dioxide P2Cl10 diphosphorus decachloride CO Carbon monoxide N2O4 Dinitrogen tetraoxide B2H6 Diboron hexahydride 1 mono 6 hexa 2 di 7 hepta 3 tri 8 octa 4 tetra 9 Nona 5 penta 10 deca
6
Formulas: Covalent Molecules
Write the symbol for each element Use the prefixes to add subscript #s Ex. Sulfur trioxide SO3
7
Formulas: Covalent Molecules
Write the symbol for each element Use the prefixes to add subscript #s Ex. sulfur hexachloride SCl6
8
Formulas: Covalent Molecules
Write the symbol for each element Use the prefixes to add subscript #s Ex. boron trifluoride BF3
9
Formulas: Covalent Molecules
Write the symbol for each element Use the prefixes to add subscript #s Ex. trisulfur dinitride S3 N2
10
Test Taking Tips!! For names and formulas, Why?
1st, always figure out if it is an element, ionic compound, or covalent molecule Why? b/c each kind has difft rules for names and formulas!
11
Test Practice (the test is Fri. 12/14)
What is the IUPAC name of : XeO3 (covalent, use prefixes) Xenon trioxide TeF6 (covalent, use prefixes) tellurium hexafluoride Al2O3 (ionic, no prefixes) aluminum oxide 4. Li2O (ionic, no prefixes) lithium oxide 5. BrF5 (covalent, use prefixes) bromine pentafluoride 6. V2O5 (ionic, no prefixes, but transition metal!!) vanadium (V) oxide 7. HgF2 (ionic, no prefixes, but transition metal!!) mercury (II) fluoride N2 (element) nitrogen
12
What is the formula for :
osmium (IV) chloride (ionic, use criss cross method) OsCl4 2. tetraphosphorus hexoxide (covalent, use prefixes) P4O6 3. potassium nitride (ionic, use criss cross method) K3N 4. sodium phosphide (ionic, use criss cross method) Na3P 5. nickel (III) chloride (ionic, use criss cross method) NiCl3 6. carbon dioxide (covalent, use prefixes) CO2 7. dinitrogen heptoxide (covalent, use prefixes) N2O7

Did you learn it? Or Did you just copy the notes down?
Were ALL of you extra helpful to the substitute teacher AND helpful to each other? Did you earn bonus points OR the evil quiz? I will ask the sub, so … Tune in tomorrow to find out! If any time is left, watch the 2 video clips then begin HW 6 which is due tomorrow!!!
