2 *Definition* Adverbs vs. Adjectives Adjectives ONLY modify nouns!!!
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or another adverb!!! Bubba talks carelessly. (adverb) Bubba is careless. (adjective) Bubba was extremely happily waiting. (adverb)

3 *Helpful Hints* Adjectives always follow a sense verb. (feel, taste, smell, sound, look, appear, seem) Sharon’s cough sounds bad. The ocean air smells fresh. Adjectives always follow a form of the verb, to be when it modifies the noun before the verb. I was nervous She has been sick all week.

4 Adverbs answer: Where, when, in what way (how), to what extent (how far, how much, to what degree

A very large crowd watched us. We had waited quite patiently for you.

7 *Practice Time* Directions: Name the adverb and the word it modifies.
Many fans eagerly watched the Olympics. Some spectators had traveled far. The mountain winds were quite strong. The crowd cheered very enthusiastically.

8 *Practice Time* Directions: Define whether the italicized word is an adverb or adjectives. This work must be done accurately. Viewing the mess, father appeared to be angry. Try to play the chess game carefully. Your shoes seem to fit badly. Prices were almost too cheap.
