Open Access Monograph Publishing – a University Press Perspective Minna Niemi-Grundström University of Tampere Books, Libraries and Open Access –seminar SKS

2 Tampere University Press (TUP)
Established in 1994, is part of the Tampere University Library Rated at level 1 in Finnish Publication Forum classification Publishes doctoral dissertations (Acta-series) and academic monographs (including edited collections) from various fields of study. Annually approximately 120 dissertations and other academic books. Most of the dissertations were published also on the TamPub portal (year 2015: 97%) TUP has published about 320 books in all (excluding dissertations). 62 % of them available in Open Access on the TamPub portal. Quality validation: manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by two outside experts (double-blind peer review), selected by TUP Editorial Board members. TUP publishing director makes the final publishing decision, based on reviews and recommends of the Editorial Board.

3 TUP business model renewal 2016
From Tampere University Press (TUP) is profiled as a peer-reviewed Open Access publishing channel and discontinue publishing printed books. The first published Open Access book by the new publishing model: Sosiaalipolitiikan lumo was published in May 2016. TUP Open Access Books are published on TamPub portal, in TUP OA Books collection and on international OAPENLibrary portal.

4 Changes in funding model
OA model: No revenue as books are not sold Almost all costs of OA publishing are covered from the Library budget only 350 € fee + layout costs are charged from the author Library has no extra money for OA publishing: library takes a risk Sets limit for publishing volume Traditional model: Preorders of the book or some other supportative funding were required before publishing decision Juvenes webstore sells the printed books. The e-books that are for sale can be found in Ellibs Ebookstore.

5 Benefits of the change Increased visibility of the books: authors can reach more readers than with traditional printed books OA increases impact of research – value also for the whole university TUP promotes high-quality OA publishing and offers an option for researchers who want or have to publish immediate OA

6 Plans for the future Make some marketing efforts
Find suitable metrics to demonstrate the value and impact of OA publishing Seek opportunities to find new funding and to enhance the visibility of publications (e.g.Ubiquity Press) To give added value also to the new Tampere3 University
