1 Science with Mr. Sieckowski
Lab Safety Safety contracts will be reviewed by students as well as parents before the start of laboratory activities. Three infractions of lab safety rules will jeopardize a student’s opportunity to participate in future lab experiences.

2 Science with Mr. Sieckowski
Introductory Science Skills These include graphing, taking measurements, using the metric system, and creating lab reports.

POPULATIONS AND ECOSYSTEMS Students will learn about the contents of foods and understand what a calorie is as well as learning just how important nutrition is for our bodies. Food Webs, Nutrition and Food Chemistry, food chains, and diversity will be explored.

BIOLOGICAL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Cells – The organelles of a cell will be examined. A major part of this unit is to get students to become familiar with microscopy techniques. The mechanisms of disease will be discussed.

FORCE, MOTION, AND THE TRANSFER OF ENERGY Physical Science – Forces such as gravity and friction will be explored. Also, we will learn how to calculate velocity and acceleration. Newton’s three laws will be applied to the physics of light and sound. ROCKETS! – Finally, at the end of the year, we will construct model rockets and launch them. Lessons on aviation and the forces involved will be discussed.

Homework and Lab Reports Students will be required to complete several formal lab reports. Based on the need for additional discovery and synthesis, due dates for the final report will float. Due dates for portions of the rough drafts, however, will be firm. Once a student receives a grade on the final report, he/she may elect to redo the report to improve the grade. This learning strategy will only apply to the first two formal reports of the year. Daily homework may not be the general rule. My website will tell you what is being worked on by unit. Mass ings will inform you of important dates and activities.

Quizzes and Tests Students will have to be prepared for pop quizzes, announced quizzes, tests, and final projects. No consistent method of assessment will be used, which sounds unusual, however, the topics are diverse and merit alternative evaluations. My goals are to allow students to learn to make observations, to solve problems, to see patterns in everyday occurrences to understand our world from those patterns.
