2 Why are we here? Statutes 3.3 - ELSA’s main fields of activity are:
The Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP) - providing opportunities for law students and young lawyers to gain work experience in a foreign legal system while learning about other cultures. Seminars and Conferences (S&C) - involving the acquisition of knowledge through exposure to professionals and foreign cultures. Academic Activities (AA) involving the development of legal knowledge through guided practical activities.

3 The aims of the S&C Area To give law students and young lawyers from different countries the opportunity to learn and discuss legal topics that are not usually included in the curricula of universities To contribute to a better legal, cultural and social education To provide a positive learning experience To provide an interaction with a new social and cultural environment To prepare for future responsibilities as members of the academic society

4 What you should take into account when organising an event
ELSA’s commitment to Human Rights A just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity International Focus Programme Try and incorporate an aspect from the IFP into your events.

5 The definition of an S&C event
Scientific Events Seminars Conference Lecture Panel Discussion ELSA Law Schools Institutional Visits Study Visits Or any other activity fulfilling the definition in Art. 3.3 of the Status of ELSA

6 ELSA Delegations Special project organised by ELSA International
To represent ELSA during the most important sessions of the main international organisations

7 Seminars & Conferences
Consists of several lectures about a legal topic Topic is discussed in a plenary Conference More individual participation and scientific contribution than a seminar Topic(s) is/are discussed in workshops to finally be reported to a plenary

8 Lectures & Panel Discussions
Discourse within a certain area of law Given by a professional speaker Topic is discussed in a plenary Panel Discussion Two or more experts discuss issues of a specific legal topic in front of an audience

9 Law Schools Requirements - Annual event
Organised in a close co-operation with an academic or institutional partner Lasting for at least 7 days Minimum 20 hours scientific programme Divided to – ELSA Law Schools International Law Schools Meet the requirements set in the Decision Book Domestic Law Schools

10 Study Visits & Institutional Visits
Academic, cultural and social exchanges of ELSA groups on international and national level Can be - Bilateral (2 groups visit each other) Multilateral (several groups visit one group) Unilateral (one group visits another group) Institutional Visit Visits to governmental or non-governmental organisations, public administrations, private institutions, universities or other higher education institutions The main purpose of the event is the visit itself

To get familiar with the ELSA regulations – Statutes and Standing Orders Council Meeting Decision Book Why? 35 years of experience in 2 documents All the important information to understand your tasks National Groups must ensure that Organising Groups are following the Decision Book

12 What else do you need to be an excellent officer?
Courage Not to be afraid of organising big projects Creativity Make events interesting for participants Do not organise an event because it would be interesting for you, think about the audience/participants Do not force people to participate Time Motivation Be a great leader and team-player at the same time
