1 Vocabulary – Day 2 •SS7G2.b - Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Bell-Ringer – Respond in your notebook to: What do you think are some similarities and differences between the Middle East and Africa?

2 Notetaking Methods For the following vocabulary words you can take notes in one of two methods: KIM Chart or 3-Column Notes Does anybody need a refresher on how to take notes in either method?

3 Silt Soil or fine sand, carried by moving water and deposited as a sediment.

4 Oasis A small fertile (green) area in a desert region, usually having a spring or well.

5 Famine Extreme lack of food in a country or a large geographical area.

6 Scarcity A shortage. Not having much of a supply.

7 Drought A period of dry weather, especially a long one that is bad for crops. Lack of rain.

8 Subsistence Farming Farming that provides enough food for the farmer and his family, but not enough for sale.

9 Soil Erosion The wearing away of topsoil due to factors such as water, wind, and tilling of farmland.

10 Work Session Complete the graphic organizer given to you for every vocabulary word.

11 Closing Recall the definitions in YOUR OWN WORDS: Silt - Oasis -
