1 Produce Plaster Components
Produce Components From Moulds

2 Produce Plaster Components
Develop understanding, knowledge and skill within fibrous work.

3 Producing Plaster Components
Aims: To Introduce fibrous Plasterwork Objectives: To recognise and understand the different materials used in fibrous plastering 3

4 Producing Plaster Components
: Introduction: what do you know: 1. Name two flexible moulding compounds? 2. What are laths used for? 3. What is Alum used for? 4. What is dextrine used for 5. What is Cold Pour Rubber? Producing Plaster Components Work in groups or as individuals Set a time limit for the questions 4

5 Producing Plaster Components
Introduction: Plaster components can be made in a number of ways using different techniques and materials depending on usage, position, size and quantity. 5

6 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Plasters: The following plasters are the ones most commonly used in fibrous plastering Casting plaster is the most common of plasters. It has a variety of uses from ceiling centres to cornices, Fine Casting Plus is the same as casting plaster. Except it has an extended shelf life. Discuss plasters and their uses and how they should be mixed, include H&S measures and any PPE required 6

7 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Crystacast is a very hard plaster used for models And small casts needing high strength Crystacal R is a very hard plaster used when making GRG castings. It can also be used for high strength small castings. 7

8 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Herculite 2, is a high strength plaster which is commonly used to make dado mouldings, architrave and other mouldings which may be venerable to knocks and bumps 8

9 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Plaster Laths used for reinforcement in two gauge casting Discuss the materials in the following slides and in what circumstances they should be used in. 9

10 Jute Scrim/Hessian, used as reinforcement in two gauge casting
Producing Plaster Components Jute Scrim/Hessian, used as reinforcement in two gauge casting Methylated Sprits, used to dilute shellac when used as a sealant Shellac, used to seal moulds benches etc. Tallow, melted down and mixed with either paraffin or vegetable oil used as a release agent when casting 10

11 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Splash Brush, used to apply plaster to moulds Casting Bowls, used to mix small amounts of plaster Zinc, used for making profiles for running up moulds Chopped Glass Strands, used as reinforcement in one gauge casting 11

12 Dextrin, used as an additive to harden the face of plaster casts
Producing Plaster Components Materials: Dextrin, used as an additive to harden the face of plaster casts Alum, added to plaster to speed up the set Tri-Sodium citrate / Size, used as a retarder, when added to plaster when casting 12

13 Materials: Producing Plaster Components
Silicone Rubber / Cold Pour, used to make moulds from original models. Hot melt compound, used for the same processes as cold pour but needs to be heated to make it a liquid. 13
