Image available at:

3 You Task Over the next 5 – 6 weeks you are planning and learning about the issues around protests in Dover You will then demonstrate your knowledge of this through creating a documentary explaining your views on immigration and the protests in Dover

4 Things to Remember You are part of a team, everybody’s input counts
You need to show an informed decision in your documentary. Gather your research, look at both sides of the story then make your judgement.

5 By the end of today You will have an introduction to the issues in Dover You will have an understanding into what a documentary is You will have expressed your initial ideas on the topic

6 Task 2 Around the room you will find a number of photographs and newspaper articles Take a few post it notes and go and look at these carefully. Write on your post it notes any comments or questions you have about the images or newspaper articles You must read at least one newspaper article as well as look at the images

7 Task 3 Choose one of the images or newspaper articles that interested your group most. Take it off the wall and bring it back to your desk. Bring all the post it as well. Now look at it in more detail. Start discussing it and the comments that people made about it.

8 Is this a type of protest? Is this effective?
“Refugees welcome” has been projected in giant letters across the iconic white cliffs of Dover, just before an alliance of racist far-right groups are due to hold anti-migration protests in the town of Dover. The projection was undertaken as a collaboration between campaign organisation Global Justice Now and guerrilla projectionists Feral X. Nick Dearden, the director of Global Justice Now said: “We should be welcoming refugees, especially given the UK has often played a very active role in generating the crises of war, poverty and inequality that are often forcing people to flee.  The UK is not ‘full’. Lebanon, a country half the size of Wales, has taken in one million Syrian refugees. It is perfectly possible for the UK to take far more migrants than we currently see.  The response of British and other European governments to the so-called ‘migrant crisis’ betrays all of the principles our societies are supposed to uphold. You cannot build a decent society of fear and hatred. Opening our borders is a step towards creating a more equal world. (first photo) Anti Fascist Protesters being circled by Police to prevent them coming into contact with the Far Right march that is taking place.

10 These protesters are part of the Anti Fascist League.
They often say they will use any means necessary to oppose Fascism. They often turn up to protests in black with masks. This is called the Black Bloc. It is a way to try and remain anonymous. Why do you think people want to hide their identity?

11 Their speeches make racist comments that people could find offensive.
Photo from Daily Mail website Far Right demonstrators waving flags making speeches and burning the EU flag. Their speeches make racist comments that people could find offensive. Should these groups be allowed to hold their meetings in public?
