1 FALCON FOCUS Examine the model and answer the following questions: Which type of plate boundary is being shown? Which types of crust are interacting at this boundary? What land form is being created?

2 Mountain Building Forces and Faults
Mountains are built in many different ways. We’ve learned that through the movement and interaction of tectonic plates. Different forces create different kinds of mountains.

3 Building Mountains Forces (stresses) that cause rocks to break or move are: 1. Tension 2. Compression 3. Shearing These forces cause the lithosphere to bend and stretch

4 These stresses can be strong enough to cause rocks to break
This creates FAULTS: a fracture/break in Earth’s lithosphere Earthquakes occur along faults when these rocks move

5 South Carolina Faults Where those lines are is where mountains occur so that’s where the faults are

6 Tension forces Tension: forces that pull rocks apart
Occurs at Divergent boundaries Tension stretches rock *Creates a normal fault* If a normal fault uplifts a large block of rock, a fault-block mountain forms

7 Normal Fault Footwall: goes up
Hanging Wall: falls down, hangs over, you can hang from it

8 Normal Faults Fault-block mountains Normal fault in Death Valley, CA

9 Compression Forces Compression: forces that push or squeeze rocks together Occurs along continental convergent boundaries Rock folds or breaks Creates reverse faults Layers of rock different colors bc they’re different ages

11 Compression can produce mountain ranges
If pressure is applied slowly, folded mountains form

12 Himalayan Mtns. Appalachian Mtns. Rocky Mtns. Of Wyoming

13 Shearing Forces Shearing: forces that cause rocks on either side of faults to push in opposite directions Causes rock to break and split apart Creates strike-slip faults Is the RESULT of a transform boundary when the rocks move Earthquakes happen as the plates move, strike-slip fault created as a result
