1 HUMAN SUNDIAL – idea to realisation your shadow tells time
Izrada: Slaven Ličina, "Sunčani sat Hrvatska" HUMAN SUNDIAL – idea to realisation your shadow tells time Every slide have detailed explanation in this space. How it works and how to make it yourself using our Layout Plan (detailed explanations in slide handouts) Made by: Slaven Ličina, „Sunčani sat”

TRUE SCHOOL PROJECT EKOLOGICAL EDUCATIONAL FUN PRACTICAL UNIQUE PERMANENT ACCURATE These cannot easily be stolen, (or vandalised) - and so they are ideal for 'public' locations, such as a pedestrian precinct. They can be made using many different materials (concrete, stone, brick, mosaic, etc) - or just painted, on to the ground. These show CORRECT time, and adjust automatically when other clocks are 'put forward or back', in the Spring / Autumn. Provided they are set slightly below 'ground-level' (on grass areas), you can run a lawnmower over it without any damage. Every "Sunclock" layout is totally UNIQUE - so you can be sure that no two are exactly alike, anywhere within the world. These make an unusual 'conversation-piece' - plus with its 'novelty factor', of YOU becoming part of your own sundial ! Its layout will actively involve the children in Measurement, with all of the dimensions given in Metres and Centimetres. Uses an easy X&Y co-ordinate 'grid' system, for setting-out. (As well as ensuring your layout will be accurate, this could help a Teacher to explain about 'graphs' in a practical way). These clearly demonstrate the ever-varying 'altitude' of the Sun, which causes the Seasons to change during the year. It includes a method for finding your TRUE North direction and avoids using an un-reliable magnetic compass for this. Teachers might like to note, that measurement accuracy of a layout is checked by using 'Right-Angle Triangles' - (but we do not actually mention "Pythagoras" theorem in that) ! In addition to their obvious connections with 'Mathematics', and 'Science' - our "Sunclock" is often used as an outdoor 'Art and Craft' project, to brighten-up School grounds with a feature which is interactive, decorative, plus vandal-proof. If you do not have any suitable ground area, then just make small 'working-models' instead. They are very simple, and cheap, to produce - using a paper print-out, glued on card. Each child can take their own 'model' home, after making it,to confirm that this really does indicate correct clock time !

How Sunclock works? Earth around the Sun – changeable movement „Sun” time = local time on the belonging meridian „Zone” time = agreement made by man Explain difference between „sun time” and „zone time” Explain eciptical, faster/slower Earth movement so as 23,5 degree angle. The orbital ellipse (with eccentricity exaggerated for effect) goes through each of the six Earth images, which are sequentially the perihelion (periapsis—nearest point to the Sun) on anywhere from 2 January to 5 January, the point of March equinox on 20 or 21 March, the point of June solstice on 20 or 21 June, the aphelion (apoapsis—farthest point from the Sun) on anywhere from 4 July to 7 July, the September equinox on 22 or 23 September, and the December solstice on 21 or 22 December. Note that the diagram shows an exaggerated representation of the shape of Earth's orbit. In reality, the actual path of Earth's orbit is not as eccentric as what is portrayed in the diagram. Explain zone time Like all other sundials, every unique "Sunclock" must be 'tailor-made' to its own Latitude & Longitude - since otherwise it would not be able to tell correct clock time, for your location.

Analemma – Sun „eight” The word "analemma" is most commonly used to mean the analemma of the Sun's apparent motion, observed from a fixed position on the Earth as shown above. Because of the Earth's annual revolution around the Sun in an orbit that is elliptical and tilted relative to the plane of the equator, an observer at a fixed point on the Earth sees the Sun appear to move in an analemma around a mean position, taking a year to do so. In astronomy, an analemma ( /ˌænəˈlɛmə/; from Greek ἀνάλημμα "pedestal of a sundial") is a curve representing the changing angular offset of a celestial body (usually the Sun) from its mean position on the celestial sphere as viewed from another celestial body (usually the Earth) „Sun movement” on the sky throughout year „Copied” analemma on the date scale

6 Result of the layout making process
Izrada: Slaven Ličina, "Sunčani sat Hrvatska" Result of the layout making process „standard time” Measurement point Complex calculations involved are not something most people would really like to work-out for themselves - and we provide you with all the accurate measurements (and detailed instructions) needed. On our 'double-ring' layouts, you MUST install both rings of Hour-markers for Standard & Daylight-Saving time. If you set-out just one of the rings, then your "Sunclock" would only be accurate for half of every year - and please note that you cannot simply 'add or subtract' an hour, to/from the time that it is showing ! This is because its 'Date-scale' has been calculated for TWO rings. If you just install one of these, then (depending on the month) you will be "standing in the wrong place" - and so your shadow would not be pointing in the right direction, towards numbers on a (missing) ring of Hour-markers which should be there. Please note that we only provide 'double-ring' plans for any locations which use Daylight-Saving time - even if customers might prefer a single-ring layout, since we do not recommend just one ring (because a person's shadow will be too short to reach the 'Hour-markers' in summer, and too long in winter-time) ! Date scale – standing point depends on time of the year „DST”

7 How to determine „true North”?
Izrada: Slaven Ličina, "Sunčani sat Hrvatska" How to determine „true North”? First step when using our layout plan Determine N-S direction using shadow string string J You get all data and detailed instructions within Layout Plan for this step. No matter which materials are used to make a "Sunclock" - it is vital the layouts be aligned exactly North-South, and East-West. A 'magnetic compass' is certainly NOT recommended for this, but within each set of Layout Plans we give a method (unique to your location) - which will find the TRUE North-South direction. Basically, it involves using any simple 'temporary support', from which you suspend a 'plumb-bob' (or a weighted string) - so that the string will be vertical. To find the North-South direction, you simply mark the shadow of your string, at a specific time – which we supply for every day of the year, calculated for your location. board S S board J

8 Measurement point marking
Izrada: Slaven Ličina, "Sunčani sat Hrvatska" Measurement point marking N-S axis Y Measurement point When you have found your North-South line, mark this with a chalk/taut string - and another line/string at right-angles to it, running East-West. The main measurements for your "Sunclock" are then taken from its 'crossing-over' point, of those two lines/strings. Our sundial designs have simple instructions, plus all the exact dimensions needed, to create your own unique 'Human Sundial'. E-W axis X
