1 Green Cleaning to Meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Existing (Green) Building Operations and Maintenance Requirements

2 Indoor Environmental Quality
IEQ Prerequisite 3: Green Cleaning Policy Intent: To reduce the exposure of building occupants and maintenance personnel to potentially hazardous chemical, biological and particulate contaminants, which adversely affect air quality, human health, building finishes, building systems and the environment.

3 Green Cleaning Policy Requirements
Purchase of Sustainable Cleaning Products and Equipment SOPs for effective cleaning, hard floor and carpet maintenance process; audit; address cleaning to protect vulnerable building occupants Strategy for promoting and improving hand hygiene via hand-washing and alcohol-based sanitizers Guidelines for safe handling and storage of chemicals including plan for managing hazardous spills or mishandling incidents Staffing and training plan on maintenance, hazards of use, disposal and recycling of cleaning chemicals, dispensing equipment and packaging. Process for collecting occupant feedback and continuous improvement to evaluate new technologies, procedures and processes.

4 Related Credits IEQ c 3.1: Green Cleaning - High Performance Cleaning Program Have in place during the performance period a high-performance cleaning program, supported by a green cleaning policy (IEQ Prerequisite 3: Green Cleaning Policy) IEQ c 3.2: Green Cleaning - Custodial Effectiveness Assessment Conduct an audit in accordance with APPA (Association of Physical Plant Administrators) Leadership in Educational Facilities’ “Custodial Staffing Guidelines” to determine the appearance level of the facility. The facility must score 3 or less. Exemplary Performance if 2 or less.

5 Related Credits continued….
IEQ c 3.3: Green Cleaning - Sustainable Cleaning Products and Materials Implement sustainable purchasing for cleaning materials and products, disposable janitorial paper products and trash bags. Cleaning products and material purchases include items used by in-house staff or outsourced service providers. One point is awarded if 30% of the total annual purchases of these products (by cost) meet at least one of the sustainability criteria. Exemplary Performance at 60%

6 Related Credits Continued…
IEQ c 3.4: Green Cleaning - Sustainable Cleaning Equipment Vacuum Cleaners Carpet Extraction Powered Floor Maintenance Equipment Propane Powered Automated scrubbing machines Battery-powered equipment Powered equipment Equipment is designed with safe guards, such as rollers or rubber bumpers, to reduce potential damage to building surfaces. A Log for all powered cleaning equipment to document the date of purchase and all repair and maintenance activities and vendor specification sheets

7 Related Credits Continued
IEQ Credit 3.5 Green Cleaning Indoor Chemical and Pollutant Source Control Employ permanent entryway systems (grilles, grates, mats) at least 10 feet long in the primary direction of travel to capture dirt and particulates entering the building at all public entry points, and develop the associated cleaning strategies to maintain those entryway systems as well as exterior walkways. Public entryways that are not in use or serve only as emergency exits are excluded from the requirements, as are private offices. Provide containment drains plumbed for appropriate disposal of hazardous liquid wastes in places where water and chemical concentrate mixing occurs for laboratory purposes.

8 Other Related Credits IEQ c 3.6: Green Cleaning - Indoor integrated Pest Management MR Credit 7: Solid Waste Management – Ongoing Consumables (products that can be recycled at the end of their useful life or come in recyclable containers or packaging is rewarded in this credit) SS credit 2: Building Exterior and hardscape Management Plan SS Credit 3: Integrated Pest Management Erosion Control, and Landscape Management Plan Coordinate any cleaning equipment with the building exterior requirements
