Redraw the molecule twice substituting a D for Ha in one molecule and a D for Hb on the other molecule. DO NOT DRAW IN THE OTHER H. If the structures are the same, the H’s are homotopic If the structures are constitutional isomer, the H’s are heterotopic If the structures are diastereomers, the H’s are diastereotopic If the structures are enantiomers, the H’s are enantiotopic

2 Shortcuts If two H’s are related by an axis of symmetry, they are homotopic. If two H’s are related by a plane of symmetry and NOT an axis of symmetry, they are enantiotopic. H’s attached to the same carbon CANNOT be heterotopic.
