1 CRIS interoperability in the UK: developing solutions for Open Access and Research Data Management
31/05/2017 Dr Tamsin Burland

2 Who are Jisc? 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM

3 Jisc R&D (Jisc Futures)
The goal is Developing new national shared technology services Delivered by Collaborating across the sector Facilitated by Jisc as a national body with a technology focus Using Jisc’s co-design innovation process 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM

4 Commercial CRIS systems manage 80% of UK publications
UK CRIS market Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) In 2014, only 49% of UK HEIs use a CRIS, but these manage 91% of publications Commercial CRIS systems manage 80% of UK publications Source credit: Johnson, R (2016) Shaping the future of Jisc OA services – A sector-wide view. 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

5 Pure is also used as a data repository in a few UK HEIs
CRIS as a repository Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) CRIS (Pure) acts as the institutional repository in 5% of UK HEIs, but for 11% of UK publications Pure is also used as a data repository in a few UK HEIs Source credit: Johnson, R (2016) Shaping the future of Jisc OA services – A sector-wide view. 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

6 Jisc and Open Access www.jisc.ac.uk/content/open-access/our-role
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Sherpa – provides info on open access policies Monitor – helps with managing and monitoring APC payments Router – provides institutions with early notifications, metadata and full text of open access articles directly to repositories and CRIS systems CORE – aggregator of OA articles IRUS – usage (download) stats for articles RIOXX – metadata profile for OA reporting and compliance (incl OpenAire) 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

7 Jisc and Research Data Management
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Research at Risk Research data shared service pilot (RDSS) Research data discovery service (RDDS) Research data metrics for usage (IRUSdata-UK) 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

8 Jisc services and CRIS interoperability
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Router API X Requires OAI-PMH or CRIS API X CRIS Open APIs Requires tracker protocol and OAI-PMH or plug-in CRUD Requires OAI-PMH, API or work-around 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

9 Jisc Publications Router
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Main issues in CRIS interoperability with Router API development required (repositories use SWORD2). Required new data model. All stakeholders (publishers, HEIs and CRIS vendors) want to see demand from others in sector before committing resource (‘chicken and egg’) 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

10 Jisc Research Data Shared Service (RDSS) Pilot
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) A research data management service to enrich UK research, providing Research data repositories Research data preservation platforms and tools Research data reporting platforms and tools Interoperability with internal and external systems 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

11 Interoperability in the RDM Architecture
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Interoperability in the RDM Architecture Credit for Architecture concepts: John Lewis (Sheffield) & Stuart Lewis (Edinburgh) 21/05/2018

12 Jisc serves in the RDM Architecture
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Research Data Shared Pilot Service Area Research Data Discoverability Service Area Existing Jisc Services/Agreement Areas Credit for Architecture concepts: John Lewis (Sheffield) & Stuart Lewis (Edinburgh) 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

13 Jisc RDSS pilots’ CRIS integration requests
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) Jisc RDSS pilots’ CRIS integration requests CRIS at the front end RDSS ‘hidden’ behind CRIS system. Researchers ingest data via the CRIS CRIS integrations at the back end Metadata In Update CRIS with new objects ingested into RDSS Update CRIS with changes in metadata Update CRIS with preservation activity Update CRIS with usage stats Metadata Out: CRIS provides RDSS with researcher/project/grant information CRIS provides RDSS with linked publications CRIS as repository Can provide data and metadata for preservation and reporting 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

14 RDSS and CRIS challenges
Title of presentation (Insert > Header & Footer > Notes and Handouts > Header > Apply to all) CRIS has to be able to push/pull info Mapping to CRIS data model problematic Lack of buy-in from vendors – requests for integrations join a queue behind other requirements 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM 21/05/2018

15 PEST summary Jisc Router Jisc RDSS P E S T
Jisc Router Jisc RDSS P Chicken/egg: each stakeholder wants to see others move first Vendors focus on developing own products and systems before working on interoperability with others. E Scheduling of required development of CRIS by vendors dependent on user group pressure. S CRIS users have different expectations to repository users. Don’t see value unless additional functionality (eg info/ORCIDs for co-authors). Recognising the diverse need/use cases of stakeholders. Need to open up to work with other services (Open Data models and Open Protocols) T Interoperability with repositories is via SWORD 2, while for commercial CRIS systems an API is required (now available) Need a Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD) API for automated ingest metadata updates. Need OAI-PMH end-point to harvest metadata, and allow compliance with OpenAire research data pilot. 31/05/2017 CRIS interoperability in the UK #JiscRDM
