9 Definition of SPIN Spin is a form of propaganda, achieved through providing a biased interpretation of an event or campaigning to persuade public opinion in favor or against some organization or public figure.

11 The role of Politicians
When newsworthy events occur, politicians often utilize “spin” , which is a heavily biased portrayal in one’s own favor of an event or situation. Politicians will provide their point of view or interpretation of the event in a way that is compatible with their own agenda in an effort to sway public opinion.

12 The role of Politicians
While traditional public relations may also rely on creative presentation of the facts, “spin” often, though, not always, implies disingenuous (untruthful or misleading) , deceptive and/or highly manipulative tactics.

13 The role of Politicians
Politicians are often accused of spin by commentators and political opponents, when they produce a counter argument or position.

14 Exit Ticket: Collaboration “Spin”
In your own words after learning about spin, define it. You may write two complete sentences or 5 bullet points. 2. With your partner(s) discuss what you wrote. 3. Afterwards, come to an agreement on what you believe the definition of spin should be in one complete sentence or 8 bullet points. 4. Be prepared to share your answers to the class.

15 Additional Time to create Ads
The following activity will allow you to understand how to write propaganda!

16 This year, homecoming will not be held on the school premises
This year, homecoming will not be held on the school premises. Rather than a DJ, a band has been hired to play. Ticket prices will cost $50 extra.

17 Write a short blurb/advertisement for your town’s paper regarding homecoming from the perspective of one of the following groups: Group 1: Parent Homecoming Planning Committee, who likes the changes since they want to make the homecoming a very exclusive, high-class event in hopes of attracting wealthier families to the school system. Group 2: Student health advocacy group called “Making Better Choices” Group 3: Student athletes, who raid the snack machines faily when starving after practice Group 4: 12th graders who can’t leave campus for lunch and despise cafeteria food Group 5: Cheerleaders who have been advocating for low calorie and fat-free snacks to be put in the vending machines Group 6: The Booster Club who has relied on the proceeds from the vending machine to fund athletics (i.e. new uniforms, improved football field, etc.)

18 Utilize a Propaganda Technique to Create an Advertisement
As a group, create an ad to present to class using your selected propaganda technique. You may create an ad for TV an ad for the radio, or a visual ad (i.e. poster) The purpose of the ad is to recruit votes for school to be closed every Friday as if you worked for Cobb County’s School Board. You may be creative in the content you provide about the closing of school, but it must be presented in a way that utilizes your propaganda technique. Be prepared to present your ad to the class.

19 Presentation and Discussion Questions
Present information without sharing the propaganda technique. How did the ads differ? Of all the ads you heard/saw today from classmates, which ad would make you most want to vote for school to be out on Fridays if you worked for the School Board? How do these propaganda techniques affect the way people vote?
