Dr Jonathan Mann on AIDS and Human Rights
“The central societal program which is responsible for ill health worldwide is discrimination. To control AIDS, we must confront those particular forms of inequity and injustice – unfairness, discrimination – not in the abstract, but in its specific and concrete manifestations which fuel the spread of AIDS.” “This approach would consider a whole human being made vulnerable to a wide variety of pathogens and unhealthy conditions as a result of how the person is treated by society” Source: Health and Human Rights Original Sources Health and Human Rights quote: Rotary International 1992 Convention: (at page 116). Section 79 of the Zimbabwe Penal Code: “Deliberate transmission of HIV Any person who Realising that there is a real risk of possibility that he or she is infected with HIV; intentionally does anything or permits the doing of anything which he or she knows will infect, or does anything which he or she realises involves a real risk or possibility of infecting another person with HIV, shall be guilty of deliberate transmission of HIV” Original Sources Health and Human Rights quote: Rotary International 1992 Convention: (at page 116). “Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to have disproportionately high burdens of HIV infection” – 9 July 2016 study in The Lancet "In many countries these men are just not welcome in health clinics. The fear of discrimination stands in the way of not only treatment, but even testing, which can go a long way to stemming the spread of the disease.” – Dr Chris Beyrer, lead author Original sources: The Lancet: Times Live: Source: Times Live, 11 July 2016

- Archbishop Desmond Tutu
“I am deeply disturbed that in the face of some of the most horrendous problems facing Africa, we concentrate on ‘what do I do in bed with whom’.” “Isn’t it sad, that in time when we face so many devastating problems – poverty, HIV/Aids, war and conflict – that in our Communion we should be investing so much time and energy on disagreement about sexual orientation?” - Archbishop Desmond Tutu ARCHBISHOP TUTU (smiling, laughing) (There are nice pics on the web of him and UN human rights commission chair Navi Pillay and me at the launch of the UN Free & Equal campaign in July 2013; we can also ask UNDP direct) Original source (picture and quotes): Source: Daily Maverick
