17 In addition to the core curriculum, a student who is blind or visually impaired needs to work harder and more deliberately than his or her peers when it comes to understanding and navigating the world outside of this basic scholarly material – and this is what is covered in the E X P A N D E D Core Curriculum.

18 So, how do we define expanded core curriculum?

29 But how can my child or student benefit from these products
But how can my child or student benefit from these products? Do I have to buy them all myself? That could get very costly.

30 The short answer to this question is: Federal Quota
The Federal Act to Promote the Education of the Blind was enacted by Congress in This act is a means for providing adapted educational materials to eligible students who meet the definition of blindness. An annual registration of eligible students determines a per capita amount of money designated for the purchase of educational materials produced by the American Printing House for the Blind (APH). These funds are credited to Federal Quota accounts which are maintained and administered by APH and its Ex Officio Trustees throughout the country.

31 How federal quota funding for a product is determined:
Products offered by APH through the Federal Quota program must be: specially developed or adapted to meet instructional needs of individuals who are blind/visually impaired commercially unavailable at the time of development manufactured by APH or with APH specifications designed for use by students younger than college- level who are blind or visually impaired, or for service providers working with such students available in the United States exclusively from APH

32 So… Federal quota funds can be used to purchase many of the APH products for Core Curriculum and Expanded Core Curriculum needs. Talk to one of your state APH Ex Officio Trustees to find out more.
