1 The Urinary System Glatt, 2017

2 The Urinary System Eliminates wastes via urine
Osmoregulation (Regulates Hydration)

3 The Kidneys Main organs of the excretory system
2 organs about the size of fist Blood enters through renal artery Waste products are removed Filtration reabsorbtion Filtered blood then reenters Bloodstream through renal vein

4 Nephrons and Filtration
Filtration- blood forced out in function units called nephrons Millions of nephrons per kidney Blood entering nephron from renal artery is under high pressure and leaks out in the glomerulus at Bowman’s Capsule -this fluid is called filtrate ( water, urea, glucose, salts, amino acids, some vitamin Materials such as amino acids, fats, and glucose are pumped back into bloodstream Rest of filtrate is now urine Water is conserved and reabsorbed in loop of Henle Osmosis kidney Kidney

5 The Ureters Tubes that lead from kidneys to urinary bladder
Carry urine from kidneys to bladder

6 The Urinary Bladder Muscular hollow organ that stores urine
Can stretch Holds urine until excretion (urination)

7 Uretha Tube that leads from urinary bladder to external environment
Excretes urine

8 Osmoregulation Balance of Water and salt
99 percent of water in is reabsorbed The composition of blood and hormones that are released may increases or decreases the amount of water being reabsorbed High salt in blood more reabsorbed Low salt in blood less reabsorbed
