Victoria reigns in England. She and her husband Albert create an atmosphere of civility gentility, & conformity. The Age is marked by great progress & optimism in all areas of industry & life. Charles Worth make Paris the center of couture fashion. Though the United States is expanding ever westward, the young nation is devastated by Civil War from 1861 – 1864. Historical Happenings

3 In 1856, the English chemist William Perkin discovered a way to mass produce color, revolutionizing the fabric dyeing process. And in 1858, he invented a new color known s mauve which the Queen wore to her daughter's wedding. Sometimes that dye was toxic  In 1836, Louis Daguerre introduced a way to capture images by exposing copper and silver to a series of chemicals and salts. The type of photography is referred to as a daguerreotype. By 1850, a variety of photographic methods were available and the average citizen could now have a portrait of their loved ones. The Bloomer Costume was an attempt to preserve a Victorian woman’s modesty while providing freedom of movement in household activities. The name of “bloomers” gradually became popularly attached to any divided skirt or knickerbocker dress for women because of Amelia Bloomer’s strong advocacy. It was especially popular among the women’s rights movement. The name “bloomers” survived in women’s fashion as a generic term for Turkish-style pantaloons, divided skirts, and for the knickerbockers worn by women when riding bicycles in the 1890s.
