3 CAST IRON Cast Iron is generally defined as an alloy of Iron with 2 to 4.5% Carbon, and usually with more than 0.1% Silicon The three main constituents are : Iron Carbon Silicon Cast iron containing more of these materials than steel.

4 TYPES OF CAST IRON: WHITE CAST IRON: CARBON PRESENT IN FORM OF CARBIDE
GREY CAST IRON : CARBON PRESENT IN FORM OF GRAPHITE DUCTILE CAST IRON: CARBON PRESENT IN FORM OF NODULAR,SPHERIODAL GRAPHITE MALLEABLE CAST IRON : GRAPHITE IN MODULE(KNOT/LUMP) FORM

5 WHITE CAST IRON

6 When the carbon present in the form of iron carbide (cementite), the cast iron obtained is known as white cast iron. When the carbon content in the structure of white cast iron is less then 4.3%, it is called hypo eutectic cast iron, but if less than 4.3% it is called hyper eutectic cast iron. White cast iron is obtained by controlling the chemical composition and cooling rate during solidification.

7 MICROSTRUCTURE OF WHITE CAST IRON:

8 PROPERTIES OF WHITE CAST IRON:
High Hardness. Wear resistant and abrasion resistant. High compressive strength of order of to Poor machinability Brittle

9 APPLICATIONS OF WHITE CAST IRON:
BALLS FOR BALL MILLING Liners For Cement Mixers Decorated furniture Nozzles

10 GRAY CAST IRON

11 Iron-carbon alloys containing flakes of graphite embedded in steel matrix, which show a grey-blackish coloured fracture due to graphite’—the free foam of carbon, are called grey cast irons. The strength of grey iron depends on The strength of steel matrix and the size Character of graphite flakes in it. Low cost of production.

12 MICROSTRUCTURE OF GRAY CAST IRON:

13 PROPERTIES OF GRAY CAST IRON:
Low melting point: (1150°—1250°C) Cast irons have excellent fluidity and take good mould-impressions easily. High compressive strength. High thermal conductivity, and have ability to withstand thermal shocks. Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion due to high silicon and perhaps other factors, than mild steels. High damping capacity -due to the graphite flakes, which breaks the continuity of the metallic matrix, and thus, vibrations are not allowed to transfer from one side of flake to other.

14 APPLICATIONS OF GRAY CAST IRON:
Decorative pattern Pump Housings Internal combustion engine Disc brake Grey Cast iron cookware
