Section 1: The Rise of City-States p Key Terms: polis, citizen, acropolis, politics, aristocracy Key Ideas: *Physical geography helped shape Greek life and culture -peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea -mountain ranges; good for raising sheep and goats -fishing and trading ships aided in the economy *The basic political unit of ancient Greece was the city-state -polis: city-state -Minoans and Myceneans (Bronze) -The Dark Age: writing and reading was forgotten *Early Greek history was marked by frequent warfare among small city-states -Myceneans destroyed the Minoans (Crete) -Myceneans were destroyed by the Dorians (north) -Trojan War (10 years); tricked with the Trojan Horse *When you finish outlining the section, on a separate sheet of paper complete the section assessment **Repeat for each section in the chapter ***At the end of the chapter, on a separate sheet of paper complete the chapter assessment
