4. Reading
One purpose of reading is to learn and understand. Reading strategies are ways to help readers understand material
One reading strategy is to figure out the main idea of text.
“Main idea” is a useful concept for writing a summary.

What is a summary?
How does “summary” relate to “main idea?”

6. Reading
A summary is condensed (shortened) version of a larger reading. 
A summary is not a rewrite of the original piece and does not have to be long nor should it be long. 
To write a summary, use your own words to express briefly  the main ideas and relevant (important) details of the piece you have read.  
Your purpose in writing the summary is to give the MOST IMPORTANT ideas of the original reading.  What was it about and what did the author want to communicate?
