3 Introduction The Colosseum is probably the most impressive building of the Roman Empire. Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater, it was the largest building of the era. Emperor Vespasian, founder of the Flavian Dynasty, started construction of the Colosseum in 72 AD. It was completed in 80 AD, the year after Vespasian's death. The huge amphitheater was built on the site of an artificial lake, part of Nero's huge park in the center of Rome which also included the Golden House (Domus Aurea) and the nearby Colossus statue. This giant statue of Nero gave the building its current name.

Who built it After the death of Nero, Vespasianus instructed to build the Colosseum for spectacular events in 72 AD. He did this, because he wanted to impress and because he wanted to make the citizens happy. With help of a large army of slaves and removable stagings, he built the Colosseum. The Colosseum was built in 10 years. the colliseum was built by hundreds/thousands of roman slaves/workers It is said that thousands of slaves built the Collosseum during the reign of Vespasian and his son Titus in 70 A.D to 82 A.D.

5 Why was it built because he wanted to entertain his subjects--indeed, some Roman emperors treated of their subjects quite well, often handing out free bread and providing them with entertainment. Vespasianus also wanted to impress visitors and the general public. Being able to build some an immense structure showed that the government was wealthy and that it took care of its people. It essentially showed the emperor's power.
