1 Environmental Technology
Growing Industry Greening of Our Environment Prospects for Science Technicians Presented by: Yeggie Dearborn, PhD Cel Analytical Inc. Air, Water,Wastewater Laboraotry Services

2 What is Environmental Technology?
One of the fastest growing industries in the Country with an important mission: Training a New Generation of Work Force with Best Available Technological Tools to Protect our Environment & Our Planet What is Environmental Technology?

3 Environmental Concerns
The quality of air, water, soil and the pollution/contamination of our environment in general has been a growing concern both locally and at the state level. More recently, these environmental issues have received national attention. New mandates are being considered for less green house gas emission and tighter regulation of industry waste discharges into the atmosphere and our waterways. We cannot take our natural world for granted any more!!! Environmental Concerns

4 Industry Regulations EPA- Environmental Protection Agency
-Drinking water, wastwater, storm water -Air pollution (Air Resource Control Board) -Pesticides, heavy metaland s, biological contaminants (bacteria , mold /fungi &parasites) Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) -Worker Protections laws Overlap and many similarities with FDA (Food and Drug Adminstration) Regulations create Jobs in this sector. Industry Regulations

5 Educational Requirements
More than half of all new jobs created require education beyond high school According to the US Department of Commerce Associate degree holders generally earn 30% more than highschool graduates. Curriculum in Environmental Technology (certification, associate degree program )– provide better chance for success in the field Obtaining specilized Ceritifications from OSHA eg. (30 hrs General industry training,, HAZPOWER Training is required to work in hazardous waste monitoring) Educational Requirements

6 What Does An Environmental Technician Do?
Performs laboratory and field test to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those that affect health. Under direction of an environmental scientist or specialist, may collect samples of air, gases, soil, water, and other materials for testing and take corrective actions as assigned. What Does An Environmental Technician Do?

7 What Characteristics Do I Need to Work In This Field?
Critical thinking skills are important as well as an aptitude for science and math. The ability to communicate in writing is also a plus. What Characteristics Do I Need to Work In This Field?

8 Example of Technical Jobs
Air Analyst Air Sampling and Monitoring (lead, asbestos, mold, hazardous chemicals) Analytical Labs (State Certified Labs) Water Quality Monitoring (chemical/biological) Envrionmetal Safety (EH&S jobs in Hopstial, Research Facilities, Construction e.g. Industrial Hygiene) Soil Analysts, Field sampling technicians Solid waste, landfill technicians Example of Technical Jobs

9 Where Could I Find a Job? The most common employers are :
Environmental Engineering Consulting Firms Analytical Laboratories Water/Wastewater Industries Governmental Agencies Agriculture Industries Food Processing Industries Pharmaceutical Industries (EH&S) Where Could I Find a Job?

10 What Is the Employment Outlook?
“Employment opportunities for Environmental Technicians are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016.” Source: SalaryExpert.com an affiliate of ERI Economic Research Institute.
