2 HUSBANDS, Love your wives!

3 The command to husbands is not “Be the head of your wife.”
Men are to accept and fulfill the leadership roles which are ordained of the Lord in the home and in the church. The “head” in marriage is the husband (Eph. 5:23). Authority is a God-given responsibility (John 5:22; 12:49; Matthew 28:18). From Creation (1 Cor. 11:3, 8-9). The command: love your wife (Col. 3:19). The command to husbands is not “Be the head of your wife.”

4 Love just as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).
God’s love in Christ is the gauge. He first loved us (1 John 4:19). His love stirs our love. He loved before receiving love (1 John 4:10). His love took action to make appeasement. Loving action was because of our sins (cf. Rom. 5:8). Love just as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).

5 Love just as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).
What did Christ’s love for His church move Him to do? Jesus loved in deed and in truth (1 John 3:16, 18). Jesus gave Himself for her (Eph. 5:25). Jesus sanctifies her (Eph. 5:26). In order to present her gloriously (Eph. 5:27). Love just as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).

6 Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).
Christ-like love is “self-sacrificing, purposeful, intelligent, active goodwill which meets needs.” Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).

7 Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).
Proper treatment stems from an understanding of marital oneness. Husband’s indebtedness… Care for your wife because she is part of your very being (cf. Gen. 2:23, 24). Half of the husband… Do not ignore, exclude, harm or cut her off. Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).

8 Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).
Treasure your wife by nourishing and cherishing (Eph. 5:29). Nourish – bountifully provide for your wife’s needs, health, strength and growth. Cherish – foster with tender care like a nursing mother with warmth, protection, security and safety with your constant presence. Love your own wife as your own body (Ephesians 5:28).
