2. REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
Camera capable of capturing motion video - make sure it has an audio plug-in
A tripod - TRIPOD everything - you’ll be able to tell if you don’t!
Microphone - either wired or wireless, doesn’t matter as long as it works

3. CAMERA TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Media - the means to store what the camera records. The most common media now is SD cards (memory cards).
White balance - the way your camera interprets white. This will need to be set as often as you change shooting environments.
Focus - the way the camera treats the most important element in your composition. Auto focus on most cameras is sufficient.
Zoom - Built in feature allowing you to quickly move to and away from an element. THE BEST ZOOM IS YOUR FEET. If you want a close up, then move closer. It’s easier to edit that way.
Iris - the feature that allows light into the camera; most cameras set this automatically.

4. QUALITY SHOOTING: Involves both video AND audio
ALWAYS USE AN EXTERNAL MIC!
AUDIO IS EVERYTHING. Use headphones to monitor the audio you are getting and mic everyone you interview.
Most cameras have two channel inputs for mics - use Channel one only
If your camera or smartphone has only one channel, it is a female aux receptor (like the kind you would use to plug your phone into your car to play music). You will need an external mic pre and line adapter to be able to use the external mic and use headphones to monitor audio.

5. GET TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA How do you turn it on? How do you record?
How do you insert the SD card?
Where is the function menu?
Where is the white balance function?
Where do you plug in the microphone?
How do you make sure that the microphone is feeding into the camera?

6. ACTIVITY MEET YOUR CAMERA!
GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER… BY THE END OF THE HOUR, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO LOCATE EVERYTHING AND DO EVERYTHING ON THE CAMERA BASICS SHEET!
