1 Science Starter: pg. 35 Workbook Answer Monday & Tuesday
Tuesday September 19, 2017 Learning Target: Recognize that radiant energy from the Sun is transformed into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis Science Starter: pg. 35 Workbook Answer Monday & Tuesday

2 Agenda Good Things- Welcome Back!!!
Tokens and Table Points and Table Jobs

3 Modeling Photosynthesis pg. 13-15
Please DO NOT EAT THE CEREAL unless instructed to do so!!!

4 Before You Begin 1. Read pg. 13 with your table group
Pg. 14 –Look at the arrows to show the materials that enter the leaf cells during photosynthesis. 3. Reactants for photosynthesis Carbon dioxide—enter leaf through stoma Water—enter plant through roots Light—Radiant energy from sun allows photosynthesis to occur Products of photosynthesis Glucose—sugar (food), chemical energy for the plant to use Oxygen—product released during photosynthesis

5 Photosynthesis water sunlight Carbon dioxide glucose oxygen
In the chloroplast using chlorophyll oxygen

6 Pg. 15 Workbook--Directions
1. From the container of cereal: Count out 18 of the same color pieces and place them in a pile on the leaf. Count 12 of another color. Count 6 of another color. Write the cereal color in your workbook on pg. 15 3. Make a water molecule (H2O). 4. Make a carbon dioxide molecule (CO2). 5. Continue making water and carbon dioxide molecules until all atoms (cereal pieces) are used up Cereal Color # of Pieces Atoms Represented 18 Oxygen (O) 12 Hydrogen (H) 6 Carbon (C)

7 Answer the following questions in your workbook.
How many molecules (clusters) of water were you able to make? How many molecules of carbon dioxide were made? Write and complete the following sentence in your workbook: The reactants of photosynthesis are… Reaction Time Energy from sunlight is needed to break the bonds which hold atoms together in the water and carbon dioxide molecules. Gently shake the leaf to mix up the cereal pieces, making sure to keep all the pieces on the leaf.

8 Answer the following questions in your workbook.
Directions Now simulate photosynthesis by recombining the atoms to form both the food and waste of plant cells. Use the same cereal pieces to make a simple sugar molecule called glucose (C6H12O6). With the remaining pieces, put together pairs of oxygen atoms (O2). Answer the following questions in your workbook. 4. How many oxygen molecules did you make? 5. How many glucose molecules did you make? 6. Write and complete the following sentence in your workbook: The products of photosynthesis are…

9 9. How do the total number of reactants and products compare?
Summary 7. How many of each kind of atom are in the reactants? Oxygen = Hydrogen = Carbon = 8. How many of each kind of atom are in the products? Oxygen = Hydrogen = Carbon = 9. How do the total number of reactants and products compare?

10 Photosynthesis: Radiant Energy from the sun transforms into Chemical Energy.
