1 “What I mean is . . . maybe it’s only us.”
Chapter 5 “What I mean is maybe it’s only us.”

2 Learning Focus? To develop understanding of what the beast could symbolise on the island. To explore Simon’s character

3 Chapter 5 Main Events Ralph thinks about life and how his outlook has changed. He decides to call a meeting and discusses what needs to change on the island in order for them to survive. A littlun claims that there is a ‘beast’ that comes out of the water at night. This terrifies all the boys. Jack and his hunters vow to kill the beast. They run away and chant. Ralph is afraid he is losing control. Simon and Piggy comfort him, saying that the other children need his guidance. The scene ends with a littlun crying into the night.

4 Allegory? The representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form. i.E the beast in the novel could symbolise many different ideas. For instance in religious terms the beast could represent the ‘devil’- an unreal being designed to play on people’s fears.

5 Religious Freudian Human Soul
the beast could represent the ‘devil’- an unreal being designed to make followers afraid of upon their own rationale. it can represent the id, the instinctual urges and desires of the human unconscious mind. the terror and the allure of the primordial desires for violence, power, and savagery that lurk within every human soul.

6 How do Jack and the hunters manipulate the boys’ fear of the beast to their own advantage?
Use 2-3 quotations to prove your ideas.

7 Jesus goes into the desert
Mark 1:12-15 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the Good News." Are there any connections here?

8 Before Jesus is crucified
And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. Are there any connections here?
