7 The King who offers us is also the High Priest who enables us!

8 Theme of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King-Priest Son!

9 The King who offers us is also the High Priest who enables us!

10 Salvation To be delivered from our enemies
a.k.a Victory!

11 Previous context about ruling with Christ
Entering Rest requires hard work – 4:11 The Word exposes areas of need that might keep us from finishing well As High Priest, Jesus can enable those who accept His offer of co-heirship

12 Next up… Heb. 5:1-10 Qualifications for a High Priest – 1-4 God’s appointed King-Priest – 5-6 Earning His qualification – 7-10

13 Hebrews 5:1-2  For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins.

14 The High Priest – 5:1-3 Taken from among men Represents men before God A man of compassion (The author will later develop the difference!)

15 Hebrews 5:3-4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.

16 The High Priest – 5:4 The office had to be realized by divine appointment, not just because it was desired!

17 Next up… Heb. 5:1-10 Qualifications for a High Priest – 1-4 God’s appointed King-Priest – 5-6

18 “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”
Hebrews 5:5-6  So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;

19 Hebrews 5:5-6 – Appointed by God
Davidic King - 2 Sam. 7 High Priest - Ps. 110

20 Next up… Heb. 5:1-10 Qualifications for a High Priest – 1-4 God’s appointed King-Priest – 5-6 Earning His qualification – 7-10

21 Hebrews 5:7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,

22 Jesus “offered up” the sacrifice of Himself
Next up… Heb. 5:1-10 Jesus “offered up” the sacrifice of Himself

23 Psalm 22:20-22 Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me.

24 Psalm 22:22-24 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel! For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard.

25 The High Priest – Qualifications
Taken from among men Represents men before God

26 The sacrifice He offered for men was accepted!
“Saved from death” The sacrifice He offered for men was accepted! “Saved” here is once again = “victory”!

27 Hebrews 5:8-10 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”

28 The High Priest – Qualifications
Taken from among men Represents men before God A man of compassion

29 Hebrews 9:28 – “Salvation”
so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation

30 “Salvation in Hebrews” – 9:28
The first coming was to deal with sin The second coming: Has nothing to do with sin Is for believers Is for disciples anxious to see Him Is future (1:14; 2:5) Is called “salvation”

31 “Salvation in Hebrews”
The author says he is writing to believers The dominant use of this term in the OT was the idea of the victory of Christ over His enemies The readers are Jewish believers The subject of the book is “the world to come”

32 “Salvation in Hebrews”
The salvation spoken of in 5:9 was first earned by Jesus through suffering What role was He “perfected” for? Jesus is now the “Author” (Captain, Forerunner) of that salvation This salvation is by works!

33 Jesus was perfected to be our Captain and High Priest

34 Perfected Even though He was the unique Son, He willingly suffered and learned the true meaning of obedience so He could lead us through suffering.

35 Perfected He completely understands when we suffer and can lead us victoriously through it.

36 Perfected No matter what we face, Jesus can lead us to a victory that has eternal implications!

37 Isaiah 53:3-4 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

38 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him.
2 Timothy 2:12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him.

39 Romans 8:16-18 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

40 as I also have received from My Father;
Revelation 2:25-27 But hold fast what you have till I come. And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations— ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’ — as I also have received from My Father;

41 Perfected Jesus Christ has the amazing and supernatural ability to make Christian living possible!

42 Bible Knowledge Commentary
“Whatever one’s suffering, the High Priest understands it, sympathizes, and makes available the “mercy” and “grace” which are needed to endure it successfully.” Bible Knowledge Commentary p. 792

43 Unfinished business – Heb. 4:1-9
Entering the Kingdom is remarkably simple. Finishing faithful is remarkably challenging.

44 The King who offers us is also the High Priest who enables us!
