2 GRAZ INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL SEGGAU
GUSS – Graz University Summer School SUSEGG – International Summer School Seggau GUSEGG GRAZ INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL SEGGAU The Acronym for our summer school is GUSEGG – Graz (University) International Summer School Seggu. It is a meger of two, actually three summer schools that the Univerity of Graz has been organizing at Seggau Castle for the past years. GUSS , the Graz University Summer School (which is already a merger of the C.IAS and the GUSS summer schools) and SUSEGG, the Internatonal Summer School Seggau.

3 TARGET GROUP internationally oriented highly motivated all disciplines
deepen understanding of European and international affairs Interest in South Eastern Europe and the Americas The Graz International Summer School Seggau is designed for internationally oriented, highly motivated students from all disciplines who wish to deepen their understanding of current European and international affairs by concentrating on the regions of South Eastern Europe and the Americas and by studying and discussing global developments and challenges within the context of collective issues reflecting aspects of individual, social, political, cultural, regional, economic, cohort and national identities.

4 Academic Program 10 Seminars Morning plenary lectures Evening events
6 ECTS Credits for participation and seminar paper The summer school lasts for two weeks and the academic program is split into thematic seminars (next slide), morning plenaries and some evening events. Students will deal with the relevance and effect on global affairs of Europe/EU (emphasis on South Eastern Europe) and the Americas by attending the offered morning and evening lectures, panel discussions, and participating in one of the following modules in the afternoon Some background about the general topic can be found below: The Topic of the Summer School: Since the 19th century, nation states as a construction of collective identities have defined the political, economic and social realities in Europe and beyond. In Benedict Anderson’s term of an imagined community, the nation state has determined both individual as well as collective identities in terms of inclusion and exclusion. This is especially true when it comes to the rights of citizens or ethnic majorities versus the legal status of minority groups or the situation of foreigners and migrants. Although the essentialist nature of state definition has never been able to do justice to the social, cultural, and economic realities and challenges, it has since the 19th century determined the political and social structures of Europe, led to war and destruction, but also to reconstruction and peace-building in the 20th century, if one takes the European Union as an example of a supranational governance structure. Within a radically changed global world, where migration and transnationalism play an important role, a reconsideration of the notion of the nation state as well as an analysis of the interconnections between collective and individual identity formation is necessary. Focusing on the emphasis areas of the University of Graz – South Eastern Europe and North, Central and South America – the discursive and symbolic constructions of Europe and beyond will be investigated from an interdisciplinary vantage point thus contributing to a redefinition of European and Inter-American Studies. The Americas provide us with many examples of an early development of the nation state in connection with processes of democratization in the late 18th and early 19th century, as well as with the question of heterogeneity versus homogeneity. South Eastern Europe can be seen as an example for a region that has been contested by European and non-European actors and therefore as a mirror image of larger dynamics in European history. This area is also a good example for discussing diversity in terms of opportunities provided and challenges faced in the past, present and future. Studying collective identities by focusing on European and American issues will thus provide a basis for meeting James Tully’s demand that “21st century identities must be supported rather than imposed, reasonable rather than unreasonable, empowering rather than disabling and liberating rather than oppressive.” (2003)

8 Venue Seggau Castle, Leibnitz, Austria
Seggau Castle is located about 40km south of Graz, near the beautiful city of Leibnitz. The castle is located on top of a hill overlooking the city of Leibnitz, amidst the vineyards of southern Styria, Austria. Its history dates back to Roman times which the unique Lapidarium bears impressive testimony to. In the 12th century the upper castle was built by Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg as an administrative and missionary bastion and in 1219, the Old Tower was given as residence to the first Bishop of the newly founded Diocese Seckau (hence the name). Seggau Castle served as the seat of the Styrian bishopric until late 18th century and remained their summer residence until well into the 20th century. The architecture remains stunning. The Old Tower was added onto twice and finally turned into a clock tower in As building material, among other things, numerous ancient stones (2nd century BC) from the cemeteries of the Roman municipality Flavia Solva were used. In 1815, the 800-year-old tower had to be taken apart, due to serious damage caused by the heavy bells. In the upper stories of the tower, about 500 marble Roman era inscriptions and relief stones, most of them legible, were found. From the most beautiful of these stones, a new facade was built in 1830/1832 in the upper castle using the example of the Vatican Lapidarium. The Seggau Lapidarium is one of the castle’s main visitor attractions, as well as the ‘Princely Chambers’ with their completely preserved baroque furnishings, the chapel, the huge historic bell ‘Liesl’, or the world-famous 300-year-old wine cellar offering regular wine-tastings. Nowadays, ‘Schloss Seggau’ is well known as a modern, well-appointed convention and conference centre that successfully fuses tradition with modernity.

10 Ecaterina Cojoca, Romania, Summer School Participant 2012
GUSS was not only an intellectually rewarding experience, but a fun one, as well, because it was a perfect combination of intensive academic studies and stimulating conversations. The literature seminar expanded my knowledge on South American writers, making me explore further the influence of the 19th century American writers in South America, and giving me potential research ideas for my own thesis. The morning lectures, definitely a challenge, helped me to better understand key contemporary political and social issues and to develop an interest in subjects outside my primary area of study. The possibility to share this experience with students and professors from various academic backgrounds make GUSS a melting pot of ideas. Attending the summer school is a challenge worth taking.
