Three methods of measuring the heart rate from an ECG. Note the small boxes (1 mm square) and large boxes (5 mm square) that form a grid. (A) Use of a heart rate ruler and 3-second marks to form a 6-second strip. Note that the reference arrow is aligned with the beginning of the R wave. The heart rate is measured at 84 complexes per minute. Use of the two 3-second marks (arrows), counting the number of complexes between these marks and extrapolating the results yields approximately the same value. (B) The counting mnemonic. (C) Use of the mnemonic to measure the heart rate. Note that the value of each little box between 50 and 60 is 2.
