2 Roots of Imperialism Racist roots: civilize (and Christianize) “savages” Military roots: more territory makes you look more powerful U.S. added Hawaii and other Pacific islands because they were strategically useful for refueling & resupplying U.S. ships

3 Roots of Imperialism Economic roots: U.S. companies & businessmen were beginning to expand to other countries We also wanted to have new markets to sell all of the good we created. Relatively speaking, the U.S. built an empire for self-serving reasons.

4 Alaska and Hawaii Alaska bought from Russians in 1867, considered fool at the time but has been very valuable Sugar companies owned by Am. citizens convinced the U.S. to annex (add) Hawaii in 1898 The annexation of Hawaii was done against the wishes of the Hawaiians BTW, why should the name Sanford Dole sound familiar…?
