Online Storage Migration ETERNUS DX S3, S4 and AF
This function is released with firmware V10L60 and later
No additional license is necessary
It reduces downtime for data migration in case of migrating an old ETERNUS Storage to a new ETERNUS Storage system
Data will be migrated on a per volume basis
Source volume and destination volume must have the same capacity

That means that the source DX and the destination DX S3 / AF can use different HDDs and RAID configurations

Online Storage Migration ETERNUS DX S3, S4 and AF
Storage Migration function supports
Data volume migration of Standard Volumes, WSV, TPV, FTV
VVOL is not support
Storage Migration without using a migration host
No additional software is required because Storage Migration is controlled by the Controller Modules of the ETERNUS DX / AF
The migration source storage system and migration destination storage system are connected via FC only
Minimum 2 paths are recommended for redundancy
Up to maximum 8 paths are supported
In case that all available migration paths fail, host I/Os are terminated with an error and can be resumed after the problem is solved
Both Storage Migration Methods, online and offline, are supported
But both methods can not run at the same time
No need to change the configuration of the source storage system

Install the new ETERNUS DX system e.g. S4 2

Diconnect FC Migration Path
The data will be written to the Destination ETERNUS in synchronous mode. That means the the Destination and the Source ETERNUS are updated. In case that all multipaths have faiiled, the application server I/Os are terminated with an error message. If only one migration path failed, a transparent, automatic switch over to the backup path will be initiated. After solving the first path error, a transparent, automatic switch back to the first path will be initiated.

7. CA-Modes for Online Storage Migration
The Server must be connected to the destination DX S3 / AF system
CA SAN-Ports must be set to CA Mode
Both ETERNUS DX systems must be connected via FC topology
CA- Ports of the Destination ETERNUS must be set to Initiator Mode on both side
CA-Ports of the Source ETERNUS must be set to CA Mode
Temporarily unmap and remap server

8. Storage Migration Setting File (1)
The online Migration is controlled by a text file that has to be set up in advance and must be uploaded via ETERNUS DX GUI
Defines the CA ports and the usable WWPNs
Defines the volumes that has to be migrated
A template file can be down loaded via ETERNUS GUI and then adapted

PATH=CE0, CM0, CA3, P0, WWPN == Associates the FC-Initiator mode port in the migration destination and the WWPN of the migration source. This example shows that the destination storage port ("CE#0 CM#0 CA#3 Port#0") is connected to the WWPN of the source storage system (" B5D6A0BA0").
Vol=0,85 == Associates the logical drives numbers in the migration source and the migration destination. This example shows that the source storage system's logical drive number "0" is associated with the destination storage system's logical drive number "85".

GROUP
Identifier for the path group. The next following migration volumes using these migration FC port that are defined here
Setting multiple FC ports in a path group creates a multipath migration path
If a path group is blocked, a path failover is performed to another FC port of the same path group
In addition, an FC port that is already set in one path group cannot be set in another
PATH
First value associates with the destination "FC-Initiator" CA port, for example "CE0,CM0,CA3,P0"
Second value associates with the source "WWPN" of the CA port, for example " B5D6A0BA0"

First value associates with source logical volume numbers for example "0"
Second value associates with destination logical volume numbers for example "85"

In case the Server writes data to the already migrated area of the destination volume, it will be replicated to the source volume as well
In case the Server writes data to the not migrated area of the destination volume, it will be directly forwarded to the source volume
This guarantees, that the data is always consistent also on source side

In case the Server reads data from the already migrated area of the destination volume, it gets the data blocks from the destination ETERNUS DX
This guarantees that the server gets always the newest data blocks
In case the Server reads data from the not migrated area of the destination volume, it will transfer the data from the source volume through the destination volume to the server
