People with Mental Health and Substance Use Conditions

10. Major Findings from Focus Groups and Key Informant Interviews
For elders, social isolation is detrimental to physical and emotional health
Cultural is much broader than just race/ethnicity; it includes stigmatized groups such as LGBTQ and persons coping with mental health and substance use disorders
Veterans: Concerns about seeking help for behavioral health; issues of confidentiality, stigma, seen as a weakness; concerns about PTSD and triggers in veterans with dementia/Alzheimer’s
Need more interpreters, translation of materials, bilingual providers, and health education tools that are readable and accessible

11. Major Findings from Focus Groups and Key Informant Interviews
Need more health care provider knowledge about LGBTQ health needs and how to provide care in culturally competent ways
Trauma, inter-generational substance use, violence, and mental health issues are closely tied together and result in significant need for mental health and substance use disorder treatment services
The overlay of poverty, poor housing, lack of 'living wage' employment and other social determinants of health contribute to poor health
The opioid abuse crisis has shed more light on underlying fragmented systems of care and payment mechanisms
