1 Engine Numbers & What They Mean
Contrary to popular belief, the emissions family and numbers do not assist in looking up details about an engine. So, where are the engine numbers? There is a pdf file under Day 1 titled BA_modeltypecode.pdf that describes how to find the MTC. It is the same file as listed under the FAQ at Supply some printed handouts if you wish. The PDF will be supplied on the PowerPortal and the main website.

6 Engine Numbers & What They Mean
Type / Trim Number Provides Very Specific Information Determines Parts by Application / OEM Top No Load RPMs / EPA Use MS While the model number narrows down engine features, the type number makes it an individual. Picture the model number as the name of a certain street in a city. The type number establishes a specific address on that street. This is necessary in order to be able to zero in on certain engine characteristics that make it unique to an OEM. One engine may be identical to another except for the muffler. Each will have a different type number in order to be able to identify the different muffler for one of the engines. There are some consistencies for type numbers but then there are also inconsistencies. For example, all small walk behind mower engines such as Classic, Sprints, Quantums, DOV and Professional Series with a type number that ends in 15 have 7/8 in diameter crankshafts, 3 and 5/32 long. It doesn’t matter if the type is 0015, 1015 or 2015. All horizontal shaft engines with 49 at the end of the type number such as 0049, 1049, 2049 are gear reduction engines. Engines with 25 such as 0025, 1025, etc have 25mm cranks. In the days of microfiche, the trim number gave us information on rpm the original engine was set up to run at. If the engine was replaced, the original trim number was looked up on a chart on the fiche cards which noted the rpm the replacement engine would be adjusted to. Currently, trim numbers relate to emission characteristics of the engine and running rpm is found on the same page that provides replacement engine information. Specifications book, pg 13

7 Engine Numbers & What They Mean
Code Number YB 8 - Digit “Production Date Code” th Month - October th Day YB - Shift, Plant, Assembly Line The engine code number provides the date the engine was manufactured and in most cases, the line and shift or plant. There is also a serial number sticker that individually identifies each engine so it can be tracked by BAS, OEMs and the EPA.
